Popular Photography Magazine

12Feb09

Popular Photography, January 2009 - You Can Do ItIn September, while I was shooting a story in Chile I got an email out of the blue from one of the editors at Popular Photography Magazine.  They had decided to add a how to shoot skiing photos for their “You Can Do It Too” monthly column in the magazine.  I was super stoked since I hadn’t known anyone there and the request seemed to come out of nowhere!  Unfortunately where I was staying at the time in Chile, my internet was pretty limited, as was my access to the photos they wanted for the column so I wasn’t able to do the ski one.

Popular Photography, January 2009 - You Can Do ItAs it turns out though, they were stoked on my concert photos and I got to write a ‘how to’ for concert photography for the same column in next month’s issue, the January issue.  They ran one of my favorite shots as a spread with another as a supporting to follow.  I don’t work a lot with many magazines outside of the snow action world so it was pretty sick to see the shots in print.

FreestyleSki Magazine Cover

05Dec08

This cover was quite the nice suprise in the mail today!  I took this last season at a Rage Films night pipe shoot at Tamarack Resort, Idaho.  This is the 3rd cover from that shoot so far, which has turned out to be the single most successful photo shoot I’ve ever done.  This time around it’s Jen Hudak on the cover.  It was a pretty big issue for me with 15 shots inside the magazine so I’m pretty stoked about that.  It’s been a pretty good season for me on the editorial side, hopefully there are a few more of these covers coming.  Right now the count is at 4 magazines and 2 DVD covers.  If you want to check out the previous two covers from the shoot at Tamarack Resort click here for the SBC Skier cover of Mike Mertion, and here for the Australian and New Zealand Skiing Magazine of Davina Williams.

Scott USA Ad – Tim Russell

15Nov08

Scott USA Ad - Tim RussellSo why not, Winter is coming and I just posted the other recent ad for Scott USA of Justin Dorey.  Here’s the first Scott ad of mine from this season of Tim Russell.  I was kind of on a theme of shooting what I’d like to call “backcounty urban” this season.  While it’s completely an oxymoron it’s one of the only ways I can think of to describe a lot of what I shot this past ski season that was really successful for me.  It was urban-type features, but out in the middle of nowhere in the backcountry, usually snowmobile accessed.  Most of these shots required a ton of work to get all the lighting equipment out there and for me to get out since I’m not exactly a sledneck!

This shot of Tim Russell was out on this shack that I shot on previously the season before but came back to it with a different approach.  I’m pumped with how it turned out in print, especially since it was a crop of just a 6 megapixel shot.

Scott USA Ad – Justin Dorey – Freeskier Magazine – December 2008

13Nov08

Justin Dorey - Scott USA Ad - Freeskier Magazine - December 2008It’s been quite a while since my last blog post so I thought I’d put something recent up.  Here’s the 2nd Scott USA ad this season with one of my photos.   It’s in the December 2008 issue of Freeskier Magazine.  This shot came from a Level 1 Productions shoot at Copper Mountain, Colorado last Spring.  I look forward to this shoot every season beceause Copper always builds us some great terrain park features that I always get shots on, some of the best of the season.   For this particular day, Copper cut out two 20 foot wide gaps in the walls of the Superpipe.  Justin Dorey was doing some huge alleyoop flatspin 540’s across the transfer gap.

1st North American Magazine Cover!

SBC Skier Magazine 8.1 - 2009 Buyer\'s Guide - Skier: Mike MertionYes, it finally happened!  I finally got that magazine cover in the continent I actually live in!  This shot is in SBC Skier Magazine out of Canada.  This shoot was crazy, had all the recipie for complete disaster however turned out to be the most successful single photo shoot I’ve ever been to.  We had wind, rain, a deteriorating pipe, more wind, more rain, some gloppy snow, yah the weather was interesting!  It did work out to say the least though, so far it’s gotten me 2 covers with 2 seperate shots, and a few other pretty big sales and a bunch of other editorial coverage.  I couldn’t be more stoked as I got to shoot in a pipe the way I had envisioned shooting it at night and it paid off in every sense.  Huge thanks to Dan Norkunas and AJ DeSaint Phalle at Rage Films and the guys over at Tamarack Resort, and of course to Mike Mertion for hitting that pipe hit at least 15 times when I had it setup like this for making this shoot happen.

09′ Freeskiing Magazine Cover (Japan)

01Oct08

Freeskiing Magazine Cover shot - Kyler CooleySo wahooo with the covers!  2nd mag cover of the season so far and this is the 2nd year in a row Freeskiing Magazine in Japan has used one of my photos for the cover shot.  Pretty stoked as I was hoping this would happen somewhere with this shot.  This was likely the most gear I’ve seen taken out on sleds in my experience as we had 4 sleds, 2 generators, my lights, my camera pack, 5 hotlight stands, a dolly, 2 filmers and of course Kyler skiing.  I’ve actually got a post here about it from the night we shot this.  It was a super fun night and I’m stoked that Dan, AJ from Rage Films and Kyler brought me out for it as it was all their idea.  I just showed up and took the photos.

Kyler Cooley, AJ DeSaint Phalle and Dan Norkunas of Rage Films, loaded up to spend a night in the backcountry shooting

Here’s a photo of what it looked like all geared up to get out there.
